Adelante Charter School is a Spanish/English two-way immersion school providing students K-6 with the unique opportunity of a bilingual education. All students are provided the opportunity to become bilingual, biliterate and bicultural. The school was formerly Cesar Chavez Charter School and with a new charter, the school became Adelante Charter School in the 2010-2011 school year. Adelante brings with it a ten year history of a strong community commitment to bilingual education.
The school serves students K-6 and the instructional program is designed according to the 90:10 model where students in K and 1st grade receive 90% of their instruction in the target language, Spanish! The remainder of the day is devoted to English Language Development. As the students progress through the grades, the amount of time in English increases until the day is 50% in Spanish and 50% in English.
The school address is 1102 E. Yanonali Street and is located off of Milpas Street. Our classrooms are part of the Franklin Elementary School campus and they share their auditorium and playground with us. Parents from all over the community walk or drive their children to school and value the opportunity for their children to learn two languages. We place great value on the arts. We are one of the schools in Santa Barbara that offers a very special art program that is funded through I.C.A.N. (Incredible Children’s Art Network). Students produce beautiful art that is aligned with the state standards and that is relevant to the community.
Students also have a weekly music class where they learn the principles of music and learn to play instruments. The Santa Barbara Dance Institute provides intense dance instruction to the students in 3rd and 4th grade. The students in 5th and 6th grade can also continue to dance in the after school SBDI class and participate in an annual super production. We promote a healthy lifestyle and give students gardening experiences. There are beds for planting and growing at different places on the campus that are tended by parents, students and community guests!
The Physical Education program provides students intense PE instruction. The students are engaged in a variety of activities to keep them active! Our students are provided weekly instruction from a PE specialist.
Our class sizes are 20 and below in grades K-3rd and our capacity is 250 students. Academic growth is measured in multiple ways. Some indicators used to gauge student success include motivation, age-appropriate school habits, fulfillment of assignments, ability to work cooperatively and independently as well as performance on class assessments and benchmark assessments. Additionally, standardized tests in English and Spanish are administered annually in grades 2-6. The Academic Performance Index (API) increased 30 points from the previous year and we continue to provide students with learning experience that promote mastery of the state standards.
We value parent participation in the education of their children. As such, parents are required to volunteer a minimum of 5 hours per month. Parents can participate in a variety of ways including working with small groups of students, assisting in the preparation of materials, supervising students during recess, and participating in school committees.
If you are looking for a bilingual educational experience for your child that combines academic excellence with a focus on preparing your child to succeed in a global community, consider Adelante Charter School.
